10 Practical Tips to Help You Save More

Motivating yourself to save money isn't always easy, but taking a look at your habits can reveal ways to save that you may not even miss. Try these practical tips for small savings that can add up!

1. Ditch the dry cleaning. Rid your wardrobe of everyday clothes that require dry cleaning. Reserve that right for special occasion pieces.

2. Reward yourself. Sign up for any free rewards program offered by the stores where you shop. In exchange for your email address, you can get coupons, discounts, or cash back rewards.

3. Use rechargable batteries. Everywhere. Although the initial investment isn't cheap, a high quality set of rechargable batteries, like Panasonic's Eneloop, can dramatically lower your battery costs. This is especially true if your kids use a lot of battery operated toys or video game controllers.

4. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). Spending $5-$10 or more on lunch every day will add up fast. Buy a compartmentalized lunch box and bring your lunch to work (or school). And if you like snacks and drinks, buy them at a grocery store instead of visiting the vending machine.

5. Let your garden grow. Like gardening? Plant vegetables and herbs to save money on groceries. Looking for a new hobby? Gardening gets you outside and can help you save money, too!

6. Drink more water. It's healthy. It's usually free. It fills you up. And it keeps you from buying soda or sugary juice drinks.

7. Use the public library for entertainment. Yes, libraries are alive and well! You can even borrow audio books from most city libraries.

8. Declutter, make some extra cash. If you haven't used it in 6 months or a year, get it out of your house. Sell it if you can, donate it, or trash it. It'll clear your head and you may even make a few bucks.

9. Shop your closet. Dig deep enough and you may find some old favorites! Or grab some friends and shop each other's closets. You may find some new accessories or bring new life to a dress.

10. Use your employer's perks. Does your employer offer discounts on local products or services? Free training opportunities or tuition reimbursement? Chat with your HR department to find out what they offer.
